About the Art in Oregon Residency Program
In collaboration with the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House, Art in Oregon has developed a unique Artist Residency Program open to any Oregon Resident artists who have resided in Oregon for at least one year prior to submitting this application. Selected artists are granted one month in a private 10’x6’ enclosed sun porch studio in the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House, ideally located in the historic McLoughlin neighborhood in Oregon City, near the public library and community center. The studio is available to the resident artist 24 hours a day, and includes access to a kitchen, bathroom, and courtyard garden (room and board not included). Only one artist will be onsite per month, making it an ideal experience for artists seeking a quiet and historically rich space in which to explore their work.  Artists will conclude their residency with a public showing of the artworks created during their stay at the Heritage House, on display in the upper level of the house. Spring Residency participants will exhibit July 11 – October 2, 2020; Summer Residency participants will exhibit October 10 – December 13, 2020. Additional exhibit opportunities for the residency artworks may become available as the residency progresses.

Applying artists are not limited in the scope of work they’d like to produce, but are encouraged to explore ideas carrying some relationship to Oregon City and/or the Heritage House. This could include historical events; current social, political, or statistical data; materials, structures, natural landscapes unique to the area; etc. Artists will be chosen based on the strength of their proposed residency projects, and images of work they’ve recently created that best reflect their current art practice. The available studio is not furnished, and artists will need to bring all their own materials and equipment necessary to create their work. This residency is ideal for most 2D/digital artists and artists who do not require large spaces or equipment to complete their projects.

There is no tuition/fees to the artist for participating in this residency! Instead, artists are granted one $300 stipend, and are required to volunteer for 20 hours at the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House during their month-long residency. There are many volunteer positions to choose from, and a list of positions is available upon request. Artists are responsible for all material and equipment costs associated with their art making.

About the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House
The Stevens-Crawford Heritage House (SCHH) is an American Foursquare home built in 1908 by prominent real estate investors Harley Stevens and his wife, Mary Elizabeth. It remained in the family until 1968 when Mertie Stevens passed away, leaving her family home to the Clackamas County Historical Society. Practical construction and craftsman architecture make this home one of the finer dwellings in the city. The house was restored to much of its original Edwardian splendor through donations of furnishings and textiles. A visit to the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House will transfer you back to Progressive Era inventions and innovations. The second floor features rotating exhibits dedicated to the history of Oregon City and how historical events shaped the community. Guided and self-guided tours available to the public.
