PACT: October – Brunch with Tony Furtado

PACT: Community Studio Series – Brunch with Tony Furtado

Saturday October 12th, 11am-1pm Location: Morning Ceramic 225 SE 6th Ave, Portland OR

Join us for a light brunch with ceramic artist and musician Tony Furtado. RSVP today seating is limited!

Artist: Tony Furtado

Tony will have on hand several of his skillfully sculpted ceramic pieces and his banjo.  He will share with us his ceramic art making practice and talk about his double artist life as a ceramic sculptor and touring musician.
For many years Tony made his living criss-crossing the country playing his music. When he started in the music biz, he was also studying to be a sculptor as a fine arts major at Cal State Hayward.  He has been back in his sculpture studio since 2007 learning, experimenting, and generally zenning out with clay when he is off the road. Most of Tony’s artwork is ceramic. Some work is glazed but most pieces are surfaced with a tough, non-fired coating called Forton (a resin based casting material) that he mixes with metal powders (copper, iron, and aluminum) which is cured and oxidized, giving it a look of bronze or distressed iron.

“The number one inspiration for my art is the natural world and finding expressive and engaging ways to portray what I see and feel. Whether its an accurate biological rendering or a stylized and surreal statement, my process almost always begins with imagining an animal somehow differently. I always try to strike a balance between fierceness and fragility – survival and surrender, something we all endure as part of this wildly changing planet.” ~ Tony Furtado

Morning Ceramics Studio is made up of an extraordinary community of ceramic artists from all walks of life.  Morning is a community ceramic space aimed at supporting and growing Portland’s humming ceramics scene. Among shared space and equipment, members can explore, develop, and grow together in a comfortable, active environment.  Morning offers 70 hours of open studio time per week and ceramic classes and workshops.

PACT(Professional Artists Coming Together) offers ongoing events for artists to meet and have conversations about our art practices and careers. Each event a new topic will serve as the springboard to start a dialog about ideas and issues that impact our lives. PACT is about creating an opportunity for artist to connect with each other in an open and supportive environment.
