About the Art in Oregon Residency Program

In collaboration with the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House, Art in Oregon has developed a unique Artist Residency Program open to all Oregon Resident artists who have resided in Oregon for at least one year prior to submitting an application to this program. Selected artists are granted one month in a private 11’x9’ studio room on the second floor in the historical Stevens-Crawford Heritage House. The studio is located in the historic McLoughlin neighborhood in Oregon City, near the public library and community center. The studio is available to the resident artist 24 hours a day, and includes access to a kitchenette, a bathroom (no shower), and a large yard, among other amenities. Artists are not permitted to live in the house during the residency. Only one artist will be onsite per month, making it an ideal experience for artists seeking a quiet and historically rich space in which to explore the concepts and challenges within their work. Artists will conclude their residency with a public group exhibition at the Mary Elizabeth Gallery in SCHH in Oregon City. The exhibition will open in October, 2022, and run through November.

The studio is located in what would have been a bedroom in the museum house that must be kept clean and dry. The studio will be equipped with a floor covering, a small table and chair, and a medium size painting easel. Artists will need to bring additional materials and equipment necessary to create their work. This residency is ideal for artists creating work in media that is contained and/or does not negatively impact the space, and is not disruptive to visitors and volunteers. Artists can arrange to move into the studio on their first day, or soon after by appointment.

Applicants are not required to create artwork about the Stevens-Crawford House, Oregon City, or the history of the area. Artists are not required to complete artworks during the residency period. Artists will be chosen based on the strength of their proposed residency project, the quality of their work, and how their art practice will be enhanced by the residency experience.  Jury selection will be by a panel of AiO members and a representative from the Clackamas County Historical Society.

There is no tuition/fees to the artist for participating in this residency! Instead, artists are granted a $500 stipend and are required to volunteer for 20 hours at the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House before or during their month-long residency. There are many volunteer positions to choose from, and a list of positions is available upon request.

Online application includes

  • Artist statement
  • CV or Resume

A numbered list prioritizing which residency session is best for you. Please indicate if there are dates you can’t attend. For example:

Inclusion and Diversity Statement

Art in Oregon believes that diversity and inclusion are integral to the fulfillment of our mission and we strive for all people to have fair access to tools and resources in order to realize creative and community endeavors. We are dedicated to providing a truly equitable environment, and strive to eliminate economic and social barriers that negatively affect artists and hinder art patronage. We work to build community connections that welcome and value all voices, and we seek to expand common notions of what constitutes artistry and creativity. Art is a form of communication; all people must be allowed to speak and be heard in their own voice.

Applications for the SCHH Artist Residency Program are welcomed from all artists regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, class, religion, belief, sex, gender, language, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, health, or other status. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t believe you meet every qualification listed in the application. If you are unsure whether you meet the qualifications of this opportunity, or how this would be determined, please feel free to contact us to discuss your application.

COVID-19 Guidelines & Requirements

We are very excited to host three amazing Artist in Residency programs in 2022, and are so looking forward to seeing you there! Art in Oregon is taking precautions to keep our program running and our artists, patrons, volunteers, and support staff protected.

  • All artists must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination with an FDA-authorized vaccine to our residency coordinators at their time of move-in to the artist studio space.
  • If Oregon reinstates the indoor mask requirement, all artists must wear an appropriate mask in the building during events and when the house is occupied by other volunteers, staff, or visitors. We recommend using a KN95 or N95 mask. If you’re not sure which kind of mask is appropriate, check out this handy guide.
  • If you are feeling sick, are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, and/or have been directly exposed to someone with COVID-19, please let us know and stay home to quarantine. Should those circumstances arise, we will do our best to work with you directly to try and compensate for any lost studio time, once you are well.

About the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House

The Stevens-Crawford Heritage House (SCHH) is an American Foursquare home built in 1908 by prominent real estate investors Harley Stevens and his wife, Mary Elizabeth. It remained in the family until 1968 when Mertie Stevens passed away, leaving her family home to the Clackamas County Historical Society. Practical construction and craftsman architecture make this home one of the finer dwellings in the city. The house was restored to much of its original Edwardian splendor through donations of furnishings and textiles. A visit to the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House will transfer you back to Progressive Era inventions and innovations. The second floor features rotating exhibits dedicated to the history of Oregon City and how historical events shaped the community. Guided and self-guided tours are available to the public. In 2021, the Mary Elizabeth Gallery was established in the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House and will host exhibits by Art in Oregon.
